Get a little sneak peek at what to expect this year!
About 11 years ago, I took a road trip from New York back home to San Diego and I was in awe of all of the colorful gift shops I came across in the Southwestern roads. They inspired me to create my own shop where I could celebrate the festive traditions and gorgeous folkloric art of Mexico. I really enjoy sharing the colorful customs of my culture with anyone who will listen.
What was it about the neighborhood of North Park that made you want to set roots for Artelexia?
When I was looking for a place to relocate my shop, I came across the beautiful tree-lined Ray Street here in North Park, and it just gave me a wonderful feeling. It was so peaceful and beautiful! I immediately visualized my shop being there. Then, as I got to know the owners of the shops and restaurants in the area, I realized what a strong community they had built along with their customers and locals, and I really wanted to be a part of that. It was a great decision.
What were some of your initial ideas when planning the brand new Make & Create w/ Artelexia block?
We host several workshops during the year at Artelexia. They are extremely popular! Our customers love to craft, connect with each other and take part in Mexican traditions. We’ve always wanted to do these workshops on a larger scale so you can say my initial idea for the Make & Create w/Artelexia block was to bring our workshops to even more people.
What can we expect at the Make & Create w/ Artelexia block at the SDCCU Festival of Arts in North Park?
We will have workshops throughout the day for both adults and children, awesome vendors, and we are hoping to have a unique art installation for everyone to enjoy.
Who is one of the vendors/performers you are most excited about this year?
We are very excited to announce we’ll be having free yoga sessions for kids and workshops by Crafty Chica and Neon Tea Party.
Is there anything at the Make & Create block that is a “can’t miss” or “must see” moment this year?
Ashley Nell Tipton, winner of Project Runway season 14, will also be doing a workshop with us!
